09/10/08 People's Opinion - HENOK ISAK
When I finished my magazine cover, I asked people in my class if they would purchase it. I received many positive reviews. Even though I new that not everyone in my class was not hip-hop rock fans, many of them still said that, they would purchase it because they said it interacts with them because it is aimed at their age group. In addition, because it looks professional and that it is new to the industry and that’s what they find interesting.
Magazine Cover Evaluation - HENOK ISAK
My magazine cover is called Paradox. It is based on hip-hop and rock music. This is why my group named the magazine Paradox, as people may believe that hip-hop and rock music can never combine or work together. This allows our magazine cover to be unique because the title relates to the type of genre music. This will attract a huge audience as hip-hop and rock fans will now be a potential buyer of the magazine. We decided to do a hip-hop magazine because half of my group listen to hip-hop and the other half listen to rock. We also got our idea from the famous Jay-Z and Linkin Park collaboration album. This gave us enough evidence that there is an audience of hip-hop and rock combination fans and that our magazine will therefore be saleable and research tells us that there is a gap in the market for our type of magazine.
Firstly, our magazine challenges other magazines because it is unique. It generates a huge audience as the hip-hop and the rock music has many fans. The increasing combinations of hip hop and rock artists working together is growing. This will give us many exciting storylines that we could right about so we would never run out of news to please our audience. Research gives us evidence of this, as the most recent hip-hop rock fusion was hip-hop superstar, Busta Rhymes and rock super group Linkin Park just put out a song together.
I believe this magazine can compete or challenge real magazines because Paradox is fresh, new and gives you more than bargained for because if you only like rock music there are sections just involving rock music or if you are just a hip-hop fan then there are only hip-hop relating articles, basically a two in one magazine. I also believe that real artists will love to presented on the front of my magazine cover and have articles on them because it will give them a chance to attract a larger audience. For example, if you are a rock fan looking through the magazine, you may find something you like in hip-hop and the fan could possibly become a growing hip-hop fan. This will be ideal for upcoming artists, as they would have a chance to prove themselves. This will challenge magazines because the best or most popular artists will appear on my magazine instead of the competitions and therefore sell more.
The magazine is young and fresh and allows upcoming artists to be known. Purple Pills is my group as a hip-hop rock band. I am the person appearing on the front cover, as I am a member of the group. This represents youth, which could convey fresh music, and hip-hop rock music is something new and fresh to the music industry. This will attract teenagers, which is very important because they are the most magazine buyers.
The pose of the picture is important, in my opinion, because it reaches out to the audience and most real magazines have a certain pose the artists do to show a little about the artist. For example, Hip-Hop Collection had the Rap superstar; The Game gives a gangster, cool and relaxed pose that is purposely done to reflect his music. My pose shows confidence and relaxation through the reaching hand and the hand and the slight smile as this could reflect on the bands, Purple Pills, type of genre music and that my band are confident that are genre of music will be a success. It also gives an ideal look to the targeted teenage audience, which could appeal to them. The effect of the glow and large picture of my body could show the superiority and this could contrast with the little picture of another group’s photo. In addition, there is another contrast as the main headline is about the positive upcoming band with the picture of me, Purple Pills, and the break up of another group with the small picture of a member of that group, DTO. The picture of Ola looking up at me makes me look even more superior and emphasises that my group will become very popular and his group has crumbled apart.
The target audience is aimed out at an age group of 13 to 19 and the front cover shows this as the two boys in the picture are both young and are in their teenage years. Also, many hip-hop and rock fans are around this age group so this makes it even more appealing to the target audience. It is aimed at both genders, boys because they are the main fans of the two genres of music but also girls because they like boy bands and that is why I specifically put strictly boys on the front cover as most girls that love the bands type of music, they usually fall in love with the males within the band, this, I believe, is a good selling technique because it is eye-catching to the female audience.
The target audience will have a working class socio-economic status and the dark colours, used on my magazine cover, portray this. The two genres of hip-hop and rock usually represent negative issues in life and therefore I have used dark colours in the background to connote this. In addition, the dress code of the artists on the front cover reflects their genre of music therefore working class people can identify what the magazines about easily and will be attracted to it.
The colloquial language will also make it easier for the social class to identify that the magazine is targeted towards them. The language is used in the genres of music so it is necessary for it to be in the magazine.
The interests of the audience will be things like skateboarding articles as rock is associated with this sport. Their interests will be the artists that feature of the magazine like my groups band, Purple Pills. In addition, the basic things like the competitions and games will attract the audience. Another thing I added was the free posters and the free mixtape CD for the interests of the hip-hop audience because they will interested in the new music of the rising British hip-hop star Sway. I decided it to be Sway’s mixtape because he is British and this will be more appealing to the audience, therefore attracting more of them and also as it is a British magazine.
The colour theme of white and purple is purposely used because the white is there to stand out against the black background and the purple is for the main headline, Purple Pills, so the colour reflects the name of the band as the main focus of that issue is about Purple Pills. This is a good attractive technique that I decided to use. The masthead was in the font ‘cracked’ because it symbolises something broken which many people regard hip-hop and rock music to be. The strapline is large so that it can be seen from a distance. The layout is of a basic professional magazine to add realism to the front cover, this was mainly the position of the bar code, masthead and the strapline.
I learned how to use the technologies of the process of constructing the magazine by analysing professional magazine covers. Using the key skills I gained I added the main features such as the masthead, strapline, main cover image and cover lines. Photoshop is were I added all these elements Photoshop was very hard to use at first but as soon as I got the hang of it things started to stick together.
If I were to make another front cover, it will involve more rock related pictures because I believe my magazine looks only hip-hop related and this is not only the theme of my magazine. In addition, I would change the position of the date and price of the magazine to nearer to the bar code because it seems more professional as most professional magazines have their date and prices in this area. Another thing will be the font because I think I should have made it more basic like real professional magazines. The last thing I would change the position of the offer sign of the free CD to the top left hand corner so it is more noticeable and therefore attract more customers and even new potential customers because a free element is a simple marketing tool.
Firstly, our magazine challenges other magazines because it is unique. It generates a huge audience as the hip-hop and the rock music has many fans. After cropping and placing my picture and began to think about how my layout will be and how would I put it in a particular way that customers will be attracted to it. I looked at real magazine covers and tried to get an idea of how they put their layout. I discovered a pattern of that there is not too much text on the front cover so I limited my text so that it would look more realistic and also because my particular magazine is mostly aimed at the working class and they do not want a lot of text on the front cover.
I then looked from a distance at my magazine and then realised that I could not really see my magazine’s main headline and this was important for people to see because it was the main attraction and the reason that issue will sale. Purple Pills, my group’s band, was the main headline so I enlarged it so that I could see it from a distance. This now became very clear.
The colour scheme I used was purple and white. White so it stood out against the black background and purple because the edition was on the group Purple Pills. The text is presented on the right and left side of the magazine is that it does not interfere with the presence of the picture. I placed another picture in the bottom left corner and after this I had finished my magazine front cover. Photoshop was very difficult to use at fist but as time went on things became easier and processes I wanted to use much faster as I new what to do. I enjoyed using this software because there are unlimited things you can do and this is very occupying.

PHOTOSHOP LESSON By ENI

Today we had our photoshop lesson on the mac computers. The instructor gave simple facts and different opinions on making photoshop as easy as possible for us. We started by Adding two images to photoshop and dragging them to two different spread sheets. One of the tools which was going to be crucial to the coming of life of the magazine was the magic wand tool. This tool alowed us to crop many parts of the image that we didnt want. Here we found out that the images we were going to take should be on a one colour background if we wanted to crop the image, prefferably a white background. Cropping wasnt easy, at first we had to crop an image whcih turned out to be very simple. On the second image, panick arose as no-one could crop out the image as they wanted to. This was so we learnt what we had to do with our photos and how to take them.
The other things we learnt about were the fonts and how they needed to be clear to the buyer of the magazin; the way in which the layers needed to be worked; the way in which the photoa overlapped one another,

06/10/08 Photoshop session 1 - Henok Isak
During the Photoshop lesson we were had a little tutorial of how to use Photoshop. The teacher taught the class the basic techniques of how to cut the images out and place them on the magazine and how to use simple effects. At first I found this software very difficult to use because things were going wrong and I was not familiar with the software to correct my mistakes. However, after a while I found out how to use Photoshop properly after exploring the different tools and effects you can use.
Choosing a picture was difficult because there were many that came out nicely but I found the one picture of myself that stood out amongst the others. The image took a fairly long time to cut the image out because I didn’t want to make mistakes as in the previous picture I tried to cut. Once it was cut out properly, I experimented with the effects I could use and then I came across the glow effect and I immediately decided to use this because I believe this will make my magazine cover stand out amongst the other magazine covers in the class because I believe I was the only one using that effect. I was very pleased of the image even though it was a kind of accident it came out like that but that’s what my magazines about because it was a good accident which is a paradox.

02/10/08 photography session - Henok Isak
The lesson when we used the digital cameras to take pictures was very exciting. This session allowed our group to explore the different camera shots and how to make ourselves look professional in the pictures. We experimented many poses and identified the poses that would suit and be necessary for are genre of music for the magazine cover. We had to be careful where we took the pictures because if the background blended in to our clothing or skin colour, then it would be very difficult to cut out our pictures in Photoshop. We took as many pictures as we could so that we had a wide selection to choose from. We took group photos and single photos so that each member in the group could either pick a picture of themselves for their magazine cover or a picture of the group if they didn’t want a single picture of themselves to be on their front cover. I took many pictures with hand gestures so that my magazine picture wouldn’t look dull and boring and also because many professional magazine have the artist posing in a particular way. We went to many locations so that the background could even give an effect of the audience of the magazine such as my group taking a group photo in front of a brick wall so that it shows the social-economic class and status of our group and because it is aimed at that social-economic class.
Magazine Cover Evaluation By Emre
AS Media Studies
Magazine Evaluation
Our music magazine forms the codes and conventions of a real music magazine as it has it has its big title on the top left of the cover. It has the headline written in a large font in the middle, with some detail underneath it. The magazine also concentrates on other events such as D.T.O’s U.K. tour at the bottom of the cover. The effect of the title being behind the persons head is commonly known in front covers. The free gift is also presented on the top right. I had decided to put more words on the top right such as “free demo C.D of D.T.O’s new album”, but then I thought that it would be better off having only “free C.D” as the audience doesn’t have to bother reading a lot, and that it would look more attractive. Lastly, the price and barcode was essential in making the front cover look realistic.
Our cover would represent young adults as it has 2 people, who are young adults themselves. The laser-light background would represent city night life as it looks like to have come from a club or a huge event. The clothes they wear look casual, so it would look as if they haven’t taken the role of a responsible adult yet. The mixture of colours makes the magazine look more appealing e.g. the title, the clothes, the background have different types of colours. This can appeal to the wide range of 16-25 year olds out there.
A rock or hip hop music magazine industry may distribute our music magazine, as we target the younger generation, which is the best age group to target magazines at, because younger adults generally have the highest interest in music. Another reason for a magazine industry to distribute our magazine is because it provides another option for young people to buy magazines related to rock or hip-hop.
Our music magazine cover would have an audience of young adults (16-25 year olds), who are mainly students, who live in the city. It would represent people with serious music interests, that consider music to play a huge part in their lives e.g. people that often go to concerts. It would appeal to people who like to find out about music events, or new albums. It would also appeal to people who are interested in interviews with artists.
We attracted our audience by placing a large image of 16-17 year olds at the front, presenting themselves as a rock/hip-hop group. We used clothes which would look quite casual for the age group as we didn’t want the magazine to look serious. We added a catchy name for our magazine. We finally decided on Paradox as it comes across as a hard-hitting. We decided on a font which would represent urban lifestyle for the name of the magazine, so we picked a font called cracked, as the typography looked quite disorientated and suited to the city, quite like graffiti. We addressed the main headline to the audience by putting the sub-heading in the middle with large, clear, fonts. We tried to make the background look like a music event so we used laser-lights, to appeal to people who may go to concerts, or clubs etc.
For the process of making the magazine front covers, we used IMacs which specialises in making graphical manipulations. The things I have learnt about technologies from the process of making the front magazine front cover is that you can find all sorts of backgrounds to put yourself in. The process of cutting yourself out from the original background may take some time, but it can look very appealing to many people once you put the right background for the photo. I have also learnt that the feathering affect can also look attractive to some people, and that it was possible for me to add that effect to my magazine cover. Being able to put words behind photos was also astounding, as I found out during the process. I therefore decided to put part of the title behind the photo. I had also looked at examples of being able to shadow a photo, which was also quite impressive, so we decided that one person of the group should add that to their magazine cover.
If I were to make another front cover, I would keep the target age the same, as it would be too difficult for me to analyse a magazine related to older people. I would change the genre from rock/hip-hop to R&B because I am quite familiar of that type of genre. Also, I would change the scenery of the cover from nightlife and laser-lights to a background of the inside of a luxurious house. I would include competitions. If there was an R&B group, I would use the photo of the whole group, instead of just adding some of the people like I did with my magazine cover. I would use photos of people dressed slightly smarter than what I originally have. I would also change the name of the magazine and use a more sensible font type.

Media Magazine Review BY ENI

For our magazine to be completed we needed to spend two lessons which totals to 4 hours and 15 minutes. This was after we took our photographs of the group. Our first intentions were to create a magazine featuring all of us in the group, (Eni, Henock Emre and Selma). When it came to our photos we tried to capture individual photos and group photos.
In the first lesson the 3-hour lesson, I decided to follow our initial plans of a group magazine so started cropping out a photo of the four of us. After spending 30 minutes on the cropping there was potential to add a background and after adding the background I adjusted some fonts to the Front cover. Not matching up to what I thought the magazine would look gave me a desire to start again with all new themes.
This time I floated from the group plan and decided to have only one of us in the front cover. The reason I chose Emre’s image to be on the front cover is that our magazine (Paradox) has to relate to a mixture of rock and hip-hop. Emre’s image had a mixture of both genres: His hooded top added a hip-hop feel to the front cover while his facial expression and miniature light savour gave him a more of a rock feel; type of renegade in some ways. Emre’s image had a mixture of both genres: His hooded top added a hip-hop feel to the front cover while his facial expression and miniature light savour gave him a more of a rock feel; type of renegade in some ways. Furthermore, the font type I
used to create the front cover was 36 as I want it to star-struck the buyers and want the magazine to be on their face. The special guests for my magazine were Oler, David and Teddy, which added a more competitive structure to the magazine as now there were two groups on the front cover. In addition, it starred shocking facts about a split up in the group. For the Purple Pills (my group) we decided to have different sub headings on each of our magazines but had to do with the group purple pills.
The music magazine that I created challenges the concept of major magazines as its different, not just different but different in its own ways as each magazine should be. The black and white textual background allows the buyer to be hypnotised by the standard in which it reflects to the font colour and image colours. Also not many magazines focus on different type of genres. Paradox reflects two types of musical genres: Hip-Hop and Rock. As it focuses on different genres, it also appeals to a variety of audience. It appeals to rock and hip-hop fans.
My magazine cover represents two types of social groups and both groups like to give a concept of renegade to the public. For example rockers such as kid Rock and Nickelback are both known to have bad records of criminality which makes them a more of a loose figure whereas the image of Emre relates to that as it gives out a loose renegade feeling to the cover. The reason it gives out a loose figure as you rarely see a hip-hop artist or rockstar pose with a light savour. In addition the photograph of Emre has an intensive pose to it. The pose corresponds to the light savour and both eyes aiming in the same direction, by aiming in the same direction it focuses on the buyer as if to say im looking at you and if that isnt enough im also pointing at you.
The magazine relates to teenagers, mainly 16-20 year olds. Its a small age group but on the whole teenagers mainly listen to these two genres. Also this magazine offers both genres in one and it could tempt teens to buy a magazine which compares both. Furthermore the price also appeals to teenagers as the magazine is out every month and at a reasonable price of £2.50. In addition, I believe the price is cheap because not only are they recieving a magazine but also are recieving a free CD mix; mixed with the finest hip-hop and rock songs. To create the magazine we used Adobe Element on the Mac coputers. At first i was confident that the procces would be a walk in the park as ive used photoshop before. Well, it wasnt. Element had introduced many different things to photoshop and changed the placements of some of the effects. Furthermore, photoshop on the mac was more complicated than on windows and this showed me how much photoshop Cs3 had developed from Photoshop CS2. Changes that i had noticed were of the outer shadow and inner shadow button not being next to the new layer button. Instead you had to find it in the toolbar after you had highlighted the text with the magic wand tool.
Now that i have an end product i believe that my ideas for the cover were good but the design wasnt. Not so much the desing but the fact that i had two covers to choose from and was in two minds of what to do to each. Also by looking at othere students work in the class and comparing theres to mine confused me and gave me second thoughts. So if I had another go at the magazine i believe that i would change 90% of it and focus more on one design than manage two at the same time. In addition I would concentrate more on the initial plan rather than looking at others for inspiration. First the background would be a street which includes the portraits of the group hanging on the wall. Secondly, the font would be different; larger than the current and more affective at its job of appealing to the buyer. The solution to the font could be a bold layout splashed onto the top left corner of the cover. Lastly, the photo's of the other group could be a type of photo that is the complete opposite to ours. The photo should give a fealing as if the two groups were enemies and the public had to choose between them.
In addition, I believe the price is cheap because not only are they recieving a magazine but also are recieving a free CD mix; mixed with the finest hip-hop and rock songs. magazine evaluation
The genre of my music magazine is rock and a bit of hip-hop, that is why we called it paradox it is a very catchy title and easy to remember. Both genres conflict with each other, which makes the magazine more interesting and gives the reader the curiosity on how we made both genres work together with the different styles and music in one magazine. My group created each of their own front covers in a different and unique way. We also made up a "band" (purple Pills) instead of using known celebrities because it is a common thing in magazine; we wanted a new celeb on the front cover so we chose ourselves as the new group and also took pictures of us together to show that we are a band. We are the main image (central image) and story on this magazine. Then the second part of the story is about D.T.O a new upcoming band/group. My magazine is only has exclusivity, it is fresh, new and it is one of a kind.
I tried to make my magazine look like a real one as much as possible like for example, the title is in a big font, it is on top of the magazine like typical magazine covers, and there is also the main story in the middle with the image behind it. There is the barcode and price to make it more realistic. There is also the text box on the side and at the right hand corner of the magazine each story linking to the central image e.g. “two bands in a battle to reach no.1”, “one of band mates falls in love”. This magazine is supposed to give the whole story about the main story “each week” e.g. the main story is the purple pills interview so most of the magazine is going to be about them.
All these stories and images on the layout develop into a real magazine. I wanted the back round of my magazine to be different and I wanted it to link up to the genres. Any media institution should distribute my magazine cover because it is everything in one, it has everything you need to know about the most popular styles of music, instead of having two separate magazines for rock and hip-hop, both of them can go into one, which will appeal a lot more to the young adults.
The music magazine represents many different social groups because of the picture of the band. We have all different styles of clothes we have more then one genres so the magazine speaks out to nearly everyone. Each person in our band has a different style e.g. I had a rock kind of look, Hennock had a hip hop look with a bit of rock, Emre had the grunger look and Eni had the cool hip look, we all come from different social groups. We were mostly targeting young teens, rock fanatics, people who are into hip-hop fashion/ music. Our different styles gave us a big advantage because we are able to attract a wider range of people. The main target for this magazine is young teens/adults at the age of 16-25, because the new generation of teenagers/young adults have become more interested with music and the cultural back round of it. We are also able to attract our target audience because the band/group is in the same age group as them.
It is very difficult making a front cover magazine even with the new technologies now; it is still hard to set out your cover on the computer, but I have learnt that by using all this technology you have to have a creative mind. You are the one who is setting everything out not the computer; you have to plan and understand how it works and are able to achieve the magazine cover you want. I did not know how to use Photoshop (IMACS) so I could not make the front cover I set out in my mind Photoshop was difficult to use it was very confusing. If you can use the IMACS good then you will be able to create anything for anyone because there’s so many different designs to choose from, but with the little information I had to create a cover with IMACS I think my magazine cover design is still great and it appeals to people (target age 16-25 yrs). As I was learning a bit by bit how to use IMAC, I was surprised with all the things you could do so each time I would learn something new, which is improving my IT skills a bit; I loved the different back rounds because there were many which connected to the whole theme of the magazine.
If I made another front cover I would definitely plan my magazine cover thoroughly and learn how to use Photoshop/IMAC properly, I would practice making one before making my real one. I would take better pictures and create better stories, and be more creative with the colours, writing, pictures, and layout and use more and different effects, which I did not know how to use properly. As my knowledge of IMAC improves, making another magazine would be much easier to do.

Production of Magazine Cover
Today our group (Emre, Selma, Henok,Eni) went into the computer room to design our front covers. On the lesson before we had taken photographs of our group to put on the front cover, to represent our rock-group called the Purple Pills. The photo's were already uploaded onto the Mac's so it was our job to use what we knew of Photoshop to create a front Magazine cover for Paradox. We each went on a computer and browsed through the images we had taken on the digital camera, and then picked the ones we decided would look good for the cover. Each person had a different image to edit and use. This would allow us to collate the ideas and come up with a final decision. In the 3 hour lesson, we all managed to produce reasonable amount of work into the production.

Paradox
Today we formatted our groups and had to come up with a suitable name, image, price and gender for a magazine. We contemplated in whose doing what. For the image we decided that we were all going to be in the front cover and the title was going to be paradox. We came to a decision that the image was going to have Selma on the front and Henock, Eni and Emre at the back. The gender that the magazine applies to is both male and females. To grab the readers attention we decided to offer them into a free cd.
Furthermore the age of the readers we are trying to appeal to is 16- 25. The Magazine will also offer exclusive inside messages from famous rockstars such as Nickleback, Jonas brothers and The Artic Monkeys.
In the second part of the lesson tried out our photoshop skills in the computer lab which related to the skills we need to develop our ma In the magazine. In the 30 minute tutorial that we had I learnt how to manipulate images from one photo to the other. Also we created backgrounds that fitted the type of photo we had.
Paradox Henok's and co's magazine
today i have worked with my group to create a new magazine called paradox. our magazine is a combination of hip-hop and rock genre and culture. we decided to do this fusion of the two different genre to stand out and be unique. the first adition will have a front cover with my groups imaginary band called purple pillz. the adition will show mainly the past collaborations of the two genre's like the jay-z and linkin park collaboration album.
Paradox
In today's lesson we planned out how our music magazines were going to turn out...
for this we had to work in groups of 4 (Selma, Eni and Hennock). We had to think of a genre for our music magazine. We finally decided on rock/hiphop. Afterwards, we found out that we were going to be on the front cover of the magazine. So we had to make a band for ourselves. So we decided to call ourselves "Purple Pills" and our magazine was going to be called "Paradox". Then we decided that our target audience should be 16-25 year olds, for both male and female, and rock/hiphop fans and that it should be priced at £2.49. It will have a free mix CD for a give away.
After, we moved into the computer room to learn how to use photoshop. We discovered how images can be manipulated and how we can design the typography of the word "Purple Pills".

PurplePills
today in lesson we done a brainstorm of our music magazine in groups of 4 (selma, Eni, Hannock, Emre)and how the magazine is going to be set out, what genre of music, what pictures will go on etc. in my group were doing a rock magazine and it will be called paradox. we made up our own band and we are going to be called the purple pills and we'll take a picture of ourselves in a group for our front cover. our magazine will include the latest songs/bands, a free CD, inside stories of the rockers etc. our target audience is female and male aged 16-25 obviously its going to be targeted at people who like rock music. our price is £2.49. after we went to the computer room and learned how to use photoshop and we discovered how images can be manipulated and how we can move, change, design and create things.

Analysis - HENOK ISAK
we analyzed a front cover of "Hip-Hop Collection" magazine. we found that the picture had been photoshopped as it seems they are standing on a street corner also their poses illustrates their confidence. the direct eye contact also expresses the rap artists confidence. the strapline 'UK stand tall" is shown in their poses.
HIp Hop magazine + rock magazine
we analysed a Hip Hop magazine which included famous artists from the English Hip Hop scene.
They posed for their images in a type of serious way to appeal to their audiences which in my mind wasn't very appealing as it made them seem big headed. We looked at the types of colors and yellow is an unisex type of color which appeals to both sex. On the Other hand the way in which the posers posed in the image showed that the magazine was aimed at males. The reason behind this is because the artists posed in a kind of laid back, confident way with clothes on whilst if it was appealing to a female it could have the laid back and confident stand but probably showing more body parts. Also to sell more it offers the reader two free cd's with the best of homegrown talent.
